Text Maps

Work on TLCMap will commence in 2019 and continue into 2020.

Text Map Text will merge functionality of a prototype of TextMapText and Recogito. TextMapText developed by Bill Pascoe and Jack Newley through C21CH at the University of Newcastle, and was inspired by Icelandic Saga Map. Recogito is a well established tool produced by Pelagios, with a community for mapping the ancient world, including place name detection and correction in texts and with images. TLCMap will combine and add to functionality, ultimately contributing to the development of Recogito, as part of the collaborative open source development community, rather than duplicate or compete with it. The core functionality, improving on or adding to existing features includes:

• Upload textual corpora in plain text or TEI.
• Automatically process to identify places and map them.
• Display map and text side by side in split screen.
• Clicking a place on the map lists occurences in the text corpus linking to each occurence in the text.
• Clicking in the text zooms to the occurence in the corpus.
• Manually correct errors, adding places not found, and correcting or removing places wrongly identified.
• User selection of NER engine and gazetteer.
• Workflow for user contribution to gazetteers.
